Autograph letter signed : Salem, to his mother, Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hawthorne, 1821 Mar. 13.

Mentioning his uncle Richard; asking why his sister Elizabeth does not write to him; telling her he is reading less because he is "more taken up in studying"; noting that he is "quite reconciled to going to College, since [he is] to spend the Vacations with [her]"; stating that while he has "not yet concluded what profession [he will] have," he has ruled out being a minister, lawyer, or physician; asking, "What do you think of my becoming an Author, and relying for support upon my pen. Indeed I think the illegibility of my handwriting is very authorlike. How proud you would feel to see my works praised by the reviewers"; ending with an admonition not to show this letter.
